Ballymullock Barn Lofts is a historic property that has been part of the McNinch family for generations. Built in 1903 as a key part of the working farm, the barn has seen various uses over the years, from housing horses and threshing corn to storing hay and lambing ewes. With the building in need of repair, the McNinch family decided to renovate it into self-catering accommodation, aiming to preserve the history while also modernising it for future sustainability.

Paul McNinch, who leads the farm, recognised the value of integrating solar power into the renovation. Having worked for clients who had installations done by Solarfix, Paul was confident in our ability to deliver a high-quality solar solution. Along with his wife Victoria, they saw the solar panel installation as a way to secure a fixed rate for electricity, protecting them from the volatile energy market while doing their part for the environment.

The Solarfix Process

When the McNinch family approached Solarfix, our first step was to conduct a comprehensive review of their energy bills, usage patterns, and overall budget. This assessment allowed us to understand their specific needs, both for their self-catering accommodation and for the wider operational demands of their farm. After analysing their current and projected energy requirements, we recommended an 11.5 kW system comprising 30 high-efficiency solar panels. This system was designed to balance upfront costs with long-term savings, ensuring it would meet the McNinch family’s needs while staying within their budget.

System Details

The system installed at Ballymullock Barn Lofts is a robust 11.5 kW setup, comprised of 30 high-efficiency solar panels. This system not only powers the barn and its self-catering accommodations but also supports other operational needs of the property. Since its installation, the system has already generated over 8,000 kWh of electricity, resulting in savings of more than £2,000.

With the integration of a My Energi Zappi car charger, the McNinch family can now charge their electric vehicles using 100% green energy produced by their solar panels. The Zappi car charger, which seamlessly integrates with the My Energi app, offers various charging modes, including utilising off-peak electricity rates or harnessing excess solar energy during the day.

Additionally, the system is compatible with home storage batteries, such as the Duracell home battery, which can store 5kW of energy for use when the sun isn't shining. This off-grid solar electricity capability enhances the property’s energy independence, ensuring a consistent power supply while minimising electricity costs.

Carbon Savings and Sustainability

For the McNinch family, future-proofing their farm in a sustainable way was a top priority. Solar energy emerged as the best choice to meet these goals. By choosing Solarfix, they have taken a significant step towards reducing their carbon footprint, with the installation expected to save 1,561 kg of carbon annually and 39,025 kg over the warranty period of the panels. This investment not only aligns with their environmental values but also ensures long-term stability and savings for their business.

The solar installation at Ballymullock Barn Lofts plays a crucial role in the family’s broader efforts to secure their farm's future in an increasingly eco-conscious market. By reducing their reliance on the grid and cutting down on carbon emissions, the McNinch family is contributing to a more sustainable future for their business and the environment.

Health & Safety

The installation was managed with meticulous attention to health and safety. Our team at Solarfix worked closely with the McNinch family to ensure minimal disruption to the property and its operations. We adhered to all safety protocols, including working at heights and electrical safety, to complete the installation efficiently and safely.

Future Integration

The system installed at Ballymullock Barn Lofts is designed with future integration in mind. The family could add a MyEnergi immersion heater controller in the future to further optimise their energy usage by diverting excess solar energy to heat water.

They appreciate the reliability and ease of use of their new solar system, as well as the financial stability it offers. By choosing Solarfix, they have not only preserved their family’s heritage but also future-proofed their business against rising energy costs.

Conclusion

The Solarfix team is proud to have been part of the project, helping the McNinch family achieve their sustainability goals while maintaining the historical integrity of their property.
