Here at Solarfix, we’re passionate about making the switch to solar as easy and hassle-free as possible. We know that preparing your home for a solar installation might feel a little overwhelming, but don’t worry—that’s what we’re here for! In this blog, we’ll walk you through the process step by step, so you know exactly what to expect and how to get your home ready for the big day.
Step 1: Starting Your Solar Journey – The Site Survey
Once you’ve made your enquiry, our first step is to book a site survey with one of our knowledgeable sales reps. This is a key part of the process because it allows us to design a solar system that’s just right for your home and energy needs.
During the survey, we’ll:
Assess Your Energy Usage: We’ll review your electricity consumption to determine the ideal system size for you, making sure it meets your needs and helps you save on bills.
Measure Your Roof Space: We’ll check how much room you have for solar panels. Our design engineers carefully calculate the best layout for optimal energy generation.
Plan the Cable Routes & Equipment Placement: We'll identify where everything will go, from your inverter and home storage batteries to optional features like the My Energi Zappi car charger or My Energi immersion heater controller. This might include spaces like your attic, garage, or hot press, depending on your home layout.
Step 2: Getting Ready for Installation Day
We’re just as excited as you are to get your solar system up and running! To make the day as smooth as possible, here are a few things you can do to help us out:
Clear the Work Areas
Wherever the equipment or cabling will go, please make sure these areas are free of clutter. This could be your attic, hot press, garage, or anywhere the team needs access to during the installation.
No Fires Please
If you have a fireplace or stove, we kindly ask that you don’t light a fire on the day of installation. Smoke can impact our roofers’ visibility and breathing, making their work more challenging.
Secure Your Pets
For everyone’s safety, please keep pets out of the way. This will ensure they don’t accidentally get hurt or interfere with the work being carried out.
Plan for a Full Day
Our team will arrive early and work throughout the day to get your system installed and commissioned. By the time we leave, your solar system will already be up and running, quietly generating clean energy for your home.
Step 3: After the Installation
When the installation is complete, your journey with Solarfix doesn’t end there—we’re with you every step of the way!
Admin Made Easy: Once your system is installed, all we need is your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number). From there, our office team will take care of the administrative work, such as registering your system with NIE and setting up your export if applicable.
Handover Appointment: After everything is up and running, the same rep who completed your site survey will return for a handover. During this session, we’ll:
Show you how your system works
Set up your monitoring app (if you have Wi-Fi) so you can track your solar generation in real time
Walk you through how exporting energy back to the grid works (if applicable)
Start Saving Immediately: From the moment we leave on installation day, your system will be running in the background, reducing your electricity bills and making your home more energy efficient.
Common Questions About Solar Installation
Why is the site survey important?
The site survey allows us to design a system that fits your home and energy needs perfectly. As one of the leading solar panels companies near you, we pride ourselves on creating bespoke solutions that maximise your energy savings.
Why should I consider home storage batteries?
Adding batteries like the Duracell home battery or SolarEdge battery to your system allows you to store any excess solar power you generate. This is especially useful in the evening or on cloudy days when your panels might not be producing as much energy. With options like 5kW battery storage, you can reduce your reliance on the grid and save even more.
How do Economy 7 tariffs work with solar?
If you’re on an Economy 7 tariff, you can charge your batteries with cheap, off-peak electricity overnight and then use that stored energy during the day. Combined with solar power, this is an excellent way to cut down your electricity bills.
Can you install hot water controllers and car chargers?
Absolutely! Many of our customers opt for My Energi immersion heater controllers to heat their water using excess solar power or a My Energi Zappi car charger to charge their electric vehicles directly from their solar panels.
