Why would you buy electricity at 30p per kW when it's cheaper to generate it yourself?

Everyone uses a Clubcard or a discount code nowadays and we’re all trying to make our money stretch further. You’re most likely chopping and changing your electricity provider every few years to get a better deal – well solar panels can offer you the best one!
Solar panels have a performance of 25 years! So after you’ve made your money back, you are literally making money from them. With every kW you produce or send back to the grid, you are reaping the rewards for at least 25 years – meaning your electricity bills wont suck anymore!
Now, lets get into some examples;
Lets say Jay-Z and Beyonce use £100 per month on electricity and they’re home during the day (living the high life) whilst the solar power is generating. This means that they can use the solar power as soon as its being generated, negating the need for a battery right now.
We would recommend a 5.2kw solar panel system with a hybrid inverter, this allows them to add a battery at a later date easily, just in case they have to get a daytime job at Lidl.

Lets also imagine that Jay-Z and Beyonce have oil heating – we would add in a My Energi immersion heater controller. This device uses any surplus solar power to heat the water within the home and typically will provide a tank of hot water daily between March and September – saving them even more money!
The initial system would cost £5,050.
It would generate approximately 4,300 units per year which would equate to a saving of around £860 per year.
Jay-Z and Beyonce’s payback time will therefore be 5.8 years. (This is based on the assumption that they will use half of what they generate and send half back to the grid. With an export payment of 10p per KWH which is the 2025 Power NI price).

However, David Attenborough, lets imagine, uses £150 a month in electricity and is out all day filming for blue planet. When his solar is generating power, he’s out exploring a coral reef meaning most of the power he is generating is going to be exported to the grid.
We would recommend a 5.2kw system with a 5kw Duracell battery, so that when he comes home after a long day of being an absolute legend, he can put the kettle on and use the stored power that he generated earlier that day.
David Attenborough would have a bigger initial outlay of £6,250, but as he would be able to use more of the energy he generates, his saving would be around £1,000 per year.
David Attenborough’s payback time will be 6.2 years (This is based on the assumption that the customer will use 2 thirds of what he generate and sell 1 third back to the grid – based on import and export tariffs in 2025).
David will also have the added benefit of charging his battery on a cheaper rate throughout the winter months. This will give him 5kw at a cheaper rate per day – meaning even more savings! Even in the winter months, electricity bills don’t have to suck.

Lets go bigger! For example, I imagine that Lewis Hamilton is spending £250 per month on electricity – he has a electric car so his bills are high. However, he’s out during the day most of the week, driving, so he’s unable to use the power as its being generated.
We would recommend a 7kw panel system, with 2x 5kw Duracell batteries and a My Energi Zappi Car Charger. This system would cost £9,800.
This would typically generate 5300 units per year and would equate to a saving of £1,300 per year.
Lewis Hamilton’s payback will be 7.8 years. (This is based on the customer using 3 quarters of everything they generate and sending 1 quarter back to the grid – tariffs in 2025 used.)
The Zappi Car Charger will allow Lewis to charge his EV 3 different ways
- From solar only
- From grid only
- From solar and grid
So not only can Lewis maximise his excess solar power, but he will also be able to charge the car quickly in the winter months straight from the grid. Lewis can also go one further and get onto a cheaper night tariff and charge his car overnight during the winter months which will equate to even more savings.
Over the course of the year, Lewis will have an electricity bill because of the sheer size of his initial bill, but it wont suck anymore.
